When I first came up with the idea of putting together a sponsorship resource for fighters, I was baffled.

I wanted to create the absolute BEST resource for fighters and I knew had a lot of work to do.

I would have to contact companies that sponsor fighters, managers, coaches, the fighters themselves...

But where do I begin? What do I do? Who do I contact? What do I say? What should I not say? How do I NOT come off like a retard? haha

That's not even taking into consideration the time spent putting the website elements together, learning the software, writing blog posts, headlines, colors, design, hosting, setting up social accounts, search engine optimization, email marketing...

Oh but wait, since I'm running my own business I still have forms too fill out, fees too pay, business taxes to calculate, and all the red tape the goes with it.

Argh, I just want to help fighters get sponsored!!! haha

Sometimes it feels like I'm being pulled in a million different directions. Sometimes I'll go off in the wrong direction.

I'm sure you feel the same way at times when trying to get sponsored.

You're putting in a ton of work at the gym, trying to improve your techniques.

You're working on getting faster, smarter, stronger, better than all your opponents...

...and you still have everything outside the gym that needs to be done too.

It can be maddening at times.

Ask yourself 3 questions to achieve your goals and get sponsored

When I start to feel frustrated I remember this realization that I came to years ago:

How often you get sidetracked is less important than the time it takes you to get back on track.

As the savants known as Blacksheep once said, "If my train goes off the track...

Pick it up! Pick it up! Pick it up!!!"

I found that asking myself a series of questions at the end of each day helped me immediately spot when I was going off course.

This helped/helps me get back in gear and move forward.

Ask yourself the same 3 questions I do, at the end of each day, to prevent yourself from straying too far from your goal to get sponsored.

Here they are:

1. Did I take action today to get sponsored?

This question places a spotlight on your actions so you'll quickly see if you spent your time productively.

Sometimes our habits are so ingrained we don't realize we spent the whole day watching cat videos.

2. Am I moving towards or away from my goal to get sponsored?
Distractions are a normal part of the day and they can be healthy. Everyone needs a break and to let off steam.

BUT you can't let it consume a huge chunk of your time; otherwise getting things done today becomes "Tomorrow". Which becomes "next week", then "next month", then the unfortunate "Never".

3. What 1 thing can I do right now to move toward my goal to get sponsored?

If this is the tenth time you've strayed from contacting sponsors, don't panic.

If you've put on a movie (again!) instead of working on your sponsorship proposal, don't berate yourself.

If you wanted to flesh out your sponsorship levels, but took a nap instead (I've done that before haha), don't secretly wish you were more like your laser-focused training partner.

Just take a breath and relax.

Know that falling off the tracks 10 times and getting back on the next day is monumentally more efficient and effective than falling off once and taking a month to reestablish yourself.

Remember that how often you get off track is not nearly as important as the time it takes you to get back on track.

The faster you recognize you've stepped off the path of trying to get sponsored, the faster you can start moving towards your goals again and the faster you can achieve them.

All it takes is one step in the right direction to shift momentum back in your favor, party your body, and make you feel right.
